A citation is the part of a political research line that a second person can open. The opposition-research page says that before a line leaves the research desk, it carries a source. On a published OppIntell briefing, that citation is a source URL plus a source type. This page answers the questions desks ask about that citation: what it contains, what validation checks, and what it does not prove. The field manual is The Complete Guide to Evidence-Backed Opposition Research for Campaigns at /blog/the-complete-guide-to-evidence-backed-opposition-research-for-campaigns.

What does the citation contain?
On a published briefing, each claim carries a source URL and a source type. The opposition-research page names FEC filings, a Secretary of State portal, a court record, an official campaign site, and a government press release. The URL is the place a second person opens. The source type tells that person which kind of document they should expect to see. A printout with no date becomes stale the moment the agency posts an amendment, so the file also keeps the date the document was read.
Identity sits above the citation. The legal name, the office, the jurisdiction, and the cycle tell a reader which candidacy the URL belongs to. A ballot name and a committee name are often different strings, so the opposition-research page anchors the file to a Secretary of State filing or an FEC committee name. A citation that matches only a surname in a large state is a lead until an address, a filing identifier, or another published identifier lines up.
What does validation check?
The methodology page names citation_validation_status. It records whether the cited document still exists at that URL and still contains the cited language. A briefing claim that fails validation stays out of the public post. The same habit belongs in any campaign file: if the link dies or the bill number was wrong, the line comes out until it is fixed. Validation is a check on the document. It is not a score for the candidate, and the public site does not publish an accuracy rate for it.
Filings change. The methodology page says records begin as public sources: FEC filings, Secretary of State candidate filings from 47 states, and county registrations from four county adapters in production. Ingestion runs on a schedule because filings change and committees terminate. Blog briefings regenerate hourly. Candidate research records refresh daily. A citation that cannot show which version was read will not match the next filing. Amended finance reports replace earlier totals, so the citation points at the report that is current.
What can the citation support?
A citation supports the sentence that the document actually contains. A vote citation supports the bill, the date, and the vote. A quote citation supports the words that were said, with the date and the place. A newspaper summary is someone else's description. A donor line documents a reported gift. It does not document a private promise. Independent expenditures and Super PAC reports are different committees from the candidate's principal campaign committee, and they are not added into the candidate's receipt total.
A personal financial disclosure is a different form from an FEC report. Mixing them produces a sentence that sounds precise and cites the wrong document. Court records belong when they match the identity block, with the court, the case number, and the date. A docket that matches only a name stays a lead. The opposition-research page also says the page is legal advice for no one. The citation shows a public record. It does not tell a campaign what it may say under its own counsel's rules.
Where do citations travel with a finding?
The public facts page describes a permanent receipt for a single published finding: the claim, a source link, a capture timestamp, a content SHA-256, and supersession history. The free-tier get_receipt tool returns provenance only: content SHA-256, span locator, source URL, capture timestamp, and supersession status. It does not return claim text or the archived source. The public receipt route is a separate page from the private, noindex, watermarked, expiring share link, and that public route stays off until PUBLIC_RECEIPT_PAGES_ENABLED is turned on. A paper file can still follow the same shape: the sentence, the URL, the date read, and a note when a later document replaces it.
The homepage export step names receipts, citations, and watermarking. Review names analyst, senior, legal, and communications. A citation that is dropped when the line is shortened has left that path. A contradiction flag needs a citation on each side, because the flag is a pointer between two sourced items and it is useful when both stay attached. Those questions are at /blog/contradiction-flags-in-candidate-research-common-questions-answered. Sharing the line without dropping the URL is /blog/how-political-consultants-can-share-candidate-findings-without-losing-sources. The canonical coverage sentence dated 2026-10-03 is 24,000 profiles in the public candidate-research index, all parties, federal, state, and local, deduplicated and index-gated. The homepage counter on 2026-10-05 read 24,130. Those figures describe the index. They are not a count of citations.

Which source types are named in public?
Named types include an FEC filing, a Secretary of State portal, a court record, an official campaign site, and a government press release. A state or local candidate may never appear in an FEC report.
